 Rev. William Bordley (1667-1741)
Headmaster of Lancaster Grammar School

Rev. William Bordley was the son of William Bordley (1605-69) Headmaster of Hawkshead School and Agnes Burrow, his 2nd wife. He was bapt. At Hawkshead 24 Jan 1666/7 (The Year of the Plague and Great Fire of London). He was educated at Sedbergh Grammar School in N.W. Yorkshire (still operating). He was admitted sizar (age 18) St. John’s College, Cambridge in 1685 and got his B.A. 1689, M.A. 1692. He was Headmaster of Lancaster Grammar School 1690-1708 (salary L30 per annum) and Vicar of Hawkshead Church 1720 until his death in 1741. He is buried in the church, marked by a brass tablet.

He married Anne Furthergill of Tunstall at Lancaster 21 Nov. 1696 and they had four children including William (1697-1735) a Freeman of Lancaster 1728 who married, had four daughters and died at Hawkshead 1735 intestate. His administration is at Richmond, Yorkshire. (Of his only brother John Bordley, bapt. at Lancaster 27 Sept 1701, nothing is known). (see P. 51 The Royal Grammar School Lancaster, a history by A.L.
