Eulogy for Alison Dix Garguilo Hodges

[original handwritten text on three pages of legal size lined paper:]

We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Alison Dix Garguilo Hodges. Alie, as she was known, was born in East Orange, New Jersey November 3, 1905. She was the daughter of William F. and Mary Alice Tennille Dix. One of three children[,] her two brothers Tennille and Norman predeceased her. The Dix family first came to summer in Westhampton Beach in 1907 and in later years became year round residents. Alie attended private schools and then spent more than 30 years in Sorrento, Italy with her Italian husband Carlo Garguilo who owned and managed The Hotel Cocumella. They had one child, a daughter Carla. During the second world war she was interned at the hotel which was first occupied by the Germans and then liberated by the British and then the Americans. During these years there was little contact possible with her family in America. Occasional word at lengthy intervals gave considerable concern about her safety and that of her daughter Carla until the latter part of world war two. Alie raised rabbits during these war years and turned their fur into socks and sweaters for the troops. She had four husbands all of whom predeceased her: Louis Kunkle [sp?], Carlo Garguilo, Luigi Garguilo, and Winthrop Hodges. At the death of her husband Luigi she returned to America to live. She took up residence in Quioque near her brother Norman and his family on the original Dix land. She lived there until her death March 10th. Alie was an avid reader. Morris West, the author, honored her by dedicating one of his books to her. She was an engaging conversationalist and was admired and loved by many. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. Her granddaughters Giovanna and Alessandra delighted her with four great grandsons. They all live along with Carla in Naples, Italy. Her loss is deeply felt by her family and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. But most importantly she will be remembered for the very special person that she was and in this remembrance we must find joy in the knowledge that we knew her.
