![]() John Edwin Dix (1816-1901) John Edwin Dix M.A. was brought up in Portland, Maine, by his uncle, Judge Williams. Entered Dartmouth College, Class of 1836. Then in business in Boston. In 1849 went to California gold mines on ship "Edward Everett," 175 days Boston to San Francisco, an officer in a stock co. of gentlemen. In business in Newark, N.J. with Chas. Joy, firm of L. Joy & Co. Married Mr. Joy's niece and on his death became head of the firm manufacturing rubber. Very successful and acquired considerable fortune. Visited Europe with his wife and 2 sons in 1884, '86, '88 and from 1890 to 92 made tour of the world. Resided in East Orange, N.J. from 1892 till his death, retiring from business about 1895. He was a philanthropist, giving largely to charities, church JC, a sincere Christian gentleman, literary in tastes (he wrote a small volume of poems) a devoted husband and father. He had a happy and serene disposition, a delightful sense of humor, optimistic, charitable, perfect and vigorous health and had a long and successful life. His old college, Dartmouth gave him the degree of Master of Arts about 1898. [WFD] John Edwin was born August 9, 1816 in Portland, Maine; died January 19, 1901 in East Orange, New Jersey; interred Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Newark, N.J. John married Mary Fisher Joy, who was born June 13, 1836; died Castleton, Vermont June 2, 1921; interred Newark, N.J. They married at Maple Valley, Va. on September 22, 1858. Their
