Jeremiah Sullivan and wife, our great grandparents, lived at Meenygorman, New Market Parish, County Cork, Ireland, during the period from about 1778 to 1848. They were from a prosperous family of independent farmers and had five children, viz.: Daniel, Dennis John, Timothy and Mary Sullivan, all born at Meenygorman, Ireland.

Three of these children, Daniel, Dennis and John, emigrated to the United States in the year 1840 and settled at Alexandria, Louisiana, where they engaged successfully in general merchandise business and in buying and shipping cotton.

1. Daniel (1805-1871) arrived at Alexandria in 1840 and remained there in business with his brothers Dennis and John until July 4th, 1857, when he moved to Indianola, Texas. Here he engaged in general merchandise and the shipping business until his death in 1871. He had never married.

His extensive business at Indianola, Calhoun County, Texas, then one of the largest wholesale grocery and general merchandise enterprises on the coast of Texas, was left to his nephew Daniel Sullivan (our father). He continued the Indianola business until January, 1882, when he moved with his family to San Antonio, Texas, and opened up his private bank. In time it became one of the largest private banks in Texas. He continued in the banking business until his death, November 30, 1931.

2. Dennis (about 1807-1879) died at Shreveport, Louisiana, leaving a large family. He was twice married and had moved to Shreveport after his second marriage to wife named McGimsey.

3. John (about 1817-1907) died at Alexandria, Louisiana, in 1907, intestate and unmarried, leaving a large estate which was administered through the Probate /sullivan/chr_02.htmlandria, Louisiana, and it is from the record of such administration and the various affidavits and proofs of heirship of the various heirs to share in his estate that much of the history of the Sullivan family was obtained.

4. Timothy Sullivan - (about 1810-1848), our grandfather, was married to Ellen Sullivan, both of Meenygorman, Ireland. They had five children, Anne, Daniel, Timothy and two other children whose names I could not fix with certainty.
